How To Bypass Ignition Switch On A Boat
- #1
I am trying to become a 1965 Starfire 90S to showtime... I seem to get NO Power to the starter... I put an ohm meter at the primal switch and it showed open when the key was put in the start position.. The bombardment (positive) goes to one side of the starter solenoid... then there are two small posts and then it continues to the starter itself... I used to hotwire my former mustang at the solenoid, simply thjat was when Led Zeppelin was still together... can someone help me with this? I figure then I will exist better able to find where the "breakdown" lies... Thanks.

Re: ignition switch bypass...
Tom, When you turn the ign swithc to the beginning position, the bombardment teminal on the switch should be connected to the solenoid terminal of the ign switch. You may test it with a voltmeter, or an ohmmeter (with the battery disconnected).
It this is OK, cheque the solenoid to footing connexion. Ane of the modest terminals runs thru the neutral rubber switch to ground. Manifestly it is either the ign switch, solenoid, safety switch or wiring that is the issue. BTW - your motor predates Zepplin, then you are qualified to jumper it.

Re: ignition switch featherbed...
Cheers for the reply! I had a new Solenoid on hand and replaced it to see if, perhaps some corrosion or age had caused th e old one to neglect... No luck. I cannot remember the method for the "Jumping" of the solenoid.. I recall I had a wire with alligator clips that I would put on two positions, so use a screw commuter to make contact between two points... I but tin can't call back which. "Old Age"!
As for the safety switch, not sure where it lives... can it be over ridden? I looked a bit at the throttle command... merely nothing jumped out at me saying " I am a safety switch"...
If the motor was turned off while in gear, would that have created this problem?
I know, besides many questions in 1 mail service. deplorable,, I was on a coil!

Re: ignition switch bypass...
I ran the positive straight to the starter and it cranked readily... But did not turn over or show whatsoever sign of doing then... Information technology did start easily earlier... I am non certain where to go from here equally I am not VERY electrically skillful and this motor has more than its share of electric nuances... Is there a logical next step? I however suspect the key switch... Would honey to rule it out completely...
Thanks over again for all the help!

Re: ignition switch bypass...
Main cherry positive battery cable to large solenoid concluding, other large solenoid final red cable to starter. Large negative battery cable from battery to powerhead basis.
Small white wire from "South" concluding of ignition switch to small iii/8" nut terminal of starter solenoid. This last/wire should have 12 volts applied to it when the key is in the Kickoff position.
Small black wire for other 3/8" nut concluding of starter solenoid to basis. If not obviously directly to ground, follow that black wire to a safety switch that may be faulty, out of aligning, or simply has too much throttle practical which would disengage it.
If no rubber switch exists at the engine, it would be within the control box which I assume is out of adjustment..... y'all would need to inspect that.

Re: ignition switch bypass...
Thanks Joe and Lindy... That helped me identify and supercede the faulty function... "switch"... everything works at present. Again, thank you for the assistance and communication.

Please kickoff a new thread. This one is ix years old. Include what motor yous need help with, 85HP Strength doesn't tell us much.
